Creating Effective Microlessons

Creating short, bite-sized chunks of training content that learners can access on their mobile phones makes learning convenient. And, learners can revisit the content multiple times so the retention rate is higher than traditional training methods that are longer and not so easily accessed. Here are some tips for creating effective microlessons:

  1. Focused – keep each lesson focused with one learning objective.
  2. KISS – keep the text and layout simple.
  3. Graphic – use visual images to illustrate the topic.
  4. Interactive – keeping it interactive will increase engagement and retention.
  5. Short – keeping it around 3-5 minutes long will maximize concentration span and increase learner engagement.
  6. Social – keep it social with learner contributions, discussions, and polls.
  7. Mobile – keep the design adaptable for mobile devices.

Meeting the Needs of Today’s Learners

The short, engaging, and interactive delivery of content that characterizes microlearning meets the needs of today’s learners.  Instead of reading long documents or manuals to grasp a concept learners can a watch a short informative video, access an infographic, or view a slideshow presentation while listening to a summary, all within a few minutes. If microlessons are designed for mobile devices, learners can multitask and receive short bursts of information at the point-of-need or when it is most convenient for them.
